Banks Shake Up Their Business Models

Discover Financial Services is expanding into the student loan business as its core product offering – credit card loans – continues to shrink. Others are looking to pare down their businesses to only those assets that can be run profitably.
Our View: The collapse of the securitization market and sweeping regulatory changes being rolled out in many countries will inevitably lead to new leaders emerging. Some lenders may find themselves better positioned than entrenched players to meet new regulatory guidelines in certain markets (e.g., student lending).
